Overview:

Truth Matters: The WHY and HOW of Non-Fiction Writing is a hands-on, 2-week course that explores both the purpose and craft of non-fiction writing. Through instruction, discussion, and guided writing time, we’ll examine a range of forms - including journalism, memoir, essays and practical non-fiction - while digging into the deeper motivations behind our work and the techniques that make it effective. Whether research- or story-driven, non-fiction has the power to educate, connect, and inspire change, and this course will help you approach it with greater clarity, passion, and skill.

What will we do in this course?

In this course, we’ll spend time writing, reading, and discussing non-fiction in a supportive, small-group setting. Each session will include practical exercises to help strengthen your voice, structure, and clarity, with guidance tailored to different forms like memoir, essays, and other non-fiction. You’ll also have the chance to receive feedback on a piece of your own writing during the second class.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone interested in non-fiction writing across genres like journalism, memoir, personal essays, or academic writing, whether you're just starting out or looking to sharpen your voice.

About the instructor:

Parrish Wilson is a Writing Therapist, and experienced Facilitator who has been leading therapeutic and transformative writing workshops since 2013. With a Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing and a Master’s in Counselling & Spirituality, Parrish weaves together the power of personal storytelling and emotional healing to create workshops that are both creatively enriching and deeply supportive. Her personal writing explores the full spectrum of lived experience - mental health, motherhood, feminism, self-compassion, dating, and modern womanhood - with honesty, warmth, and courage.

Parrish’s work has been published in You Are Not Alone: An Anthology of Perinatal Mental Health Stories from Conception to Post-Partum (Canadian Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative, 2021), and More Than a Zero (Women Who Inspire, 2017), while her master’s thesis, Rewriting the Trauma Narrative: The Effectiveness of Autobiographical Writing in the Treatment of PTSD and Complex Trauma (St. Paul University, Ottawa, 2022), reflects her deep commitment to the intersection of writing and healing. Her research identified five powerful ways autobiographical writing supports mental health: breaking the silence, controlling the narrative, being witnessed, connecting with others, and experiencing cathartic release.

She is currently writing a book about therapeutic writing, further exploring how personal narrative can be a powerful tool for self-understanding, empowerment, and healing. Whether you’re writing for personal growth, publication, or social impact, Parrish’s workshops offer an inspiring space to strengthen your voice and connect with your purpose.
